Steve, first welcome the wonderful world of photography. By the time you read this, chances are that everything that I write will be obsolete, but here goes. The first question that you should ask is, What kind of photography do I want to do? Sports, landscapes, weddings, etc. will all require a different camera, in terms of focusing, ISO, continuous shooting, etc. Also, the glass is just as important as the camera body.

I am a Canon shooter and a great site for canon gear is http://www.the-digital-picture.com There is also a Nikon site that I’ve heard mentioned, http://www.nikonians.org/ I don’t know if there is a site that compares the Canon gear to Nikon, but these two sites seem to be popular.

Cincinnati area definitely lacks a brick/mortar photography warehouse, like http://www.adorama.com or http://www.bhphotovideo.com I found it useful to do google searches on your topic and getting your education started that way.

My one skepticism which doesn’t affect you because you know what you want and need and can order it online, is there isn’t a qualified Canon dealer in Cincinnati area to go talk to and get one on one feedback or look at physical lenses, etc. Thoughts?
