Adam + Katie’s Wedding | Kumler Chapel

Second wedding of the weekend brought me to Kumler Chapel in Oxford OH for another, say it with me “Miami Merger Wedding”. I was told that Miami University is known for generating the most wedding couples (Miami Mergers) of any college in the country. Must be something in the water. Great weather allowed us to venture onto the MU campus for some glorious sky shots.

One of the difficulties that many photographers face are the harsh shadows on the back wall when shooting group formals and people’s faces in the front rows causing shadows for those in the back rows. I love how vivid these images are with everyone being in sharp focus and “separating” from the background.

Many Miami mergers are sealed with a kiss under the famous Upham arches.

Love how the sky “popped” as I filled my shadows with flash. Shooting available light only would definitely have reduced the skies color.

To me good composition is about angles. For this shot I wanted to get the wide angle perspective in a vertical format to include the bright sunlight and the couple in perspective to the Upham Arch.

Marriott at Cincinnati North doesn’t have much of a landscape on the exterior, so instead of looking horizontally across a car filled parking lot, I looked vertically to get the hotel’s entry way. You can see how the lines converge to point to the couple. The colors of the ceiling really came out great and I added a little backlight flash about 2 feet off the ground pointed at the couples waists, while positioning the main flash on camera left.
